今回の作品の内容は聖書に描かれていたテーマに基づいているもので、写真を画像編集ソフトで調整して作りました。

I made this picture based on a theme described in the Bible by manipulating some photographs in some graphic editing software.

作成した時、「ヨハネの黙示録」に夢中になっていました。「ヨハネの黙示録」とは聖書の中に書かれている書ですから、宗教的な物語ではあります。ただし、ここではその物語が本当だったのか、空想の物語だったのかという議論に一切振り合わず、「本当だったかのように」考えてみたいと考えています。つまり、ここでは聖書を文学として扱うという視点、つまり、「文学としての聖書」という、立派な歴史を持つ立場から語りたいと思います。

When I made this piece, I was totally absorbed in reading "The Book of Revelations." "The Book of Revelations" is a book in the Bible, and as such, it is a religious story. But I don't want to touch on the debate of whether this is a true story or fiction here. Instead, I want to treat it "as if it were true." In other words, I want to speak here from a point of view that treats the Bible like literature, from the stance of the time-honored tradition of "the Bible as literature"

「ヨハネの黙示録」とは、新約聖書の一番最後の書です。著者が「ヨハネ」と名乗り、キリスト教では神様という存在でもあるイエス・キリストから受けた啓示（未来の出来事に関する説明）の内容をその書に記したと指摘します。

"The Book of Revelations" is the final book in the New Testament. The author identifies himself as "John" and claims that he has recorded in this book a revelation (explanation about events that will happen in the future) received from Jesus Christ, who is of course God in Christianity.

「新約聖書」（キリスト教聖書の後半と考えても良いです）の主人公であるイエス・キリストには 12 使徒がいましたが、使徒ヨハネはその一人でした。 12 使徒や使徒ヨハネのお話を描く聖書の内容はどこまで歴史上本当か、歴史学の学界では議論になるところが多く、私たち現代人に完全に分かる方法はありませんが、この「使徒ヨハネ」という人物は歴史的に存在していた人物とされているようです。（ただし、「ヨハネの黙示録」を書いた「ヨハネ」とは「使徒ヨハネ」なのか、別な「ヨハネ」なのかという議論は聖書学の学界では未解決のようです。）

Jesus Christ, the "main character" of "The New Testament" (which can be thought of as the last half of the Christian Bible), had twelve apostles, and John the Apostle is one of these apostles. The issue of just how much historical truth is contained in the Bible, in which the tales of the twelve apostles and the John the Apostle unfold, is the subject of much debate in the world of historical research, and there is no way modern people can be certain for every portion of every story contained in the Bible. However, we do know that this "John the Apostle" was a real person historically (of course, whether this "John" that penned "The Book of Revelations" is the same John as "John the Apostle," or a different "John" altogether is an issue that is unresolved in the world of Biblical research).

著者のヨハネはエーゲ海に浮かぶギリシャの小島である「パトモス島」に幽閉されていたらしいとのことから「幽閉された」を今回の作品名に決めました。遠い、遠い島に幽閉されて、寂しい生活を送っている中で突然衝撃的な霊的体験をしたヨハネの精神を探りたいと思いました。

The author John was supposedly exiled to Patmos, a small Greek island floating in the Aegean Sea , and that served as inspiration for me to title this piece "exiled." I wanted to explore the feeling of the author in terms of being exiled to an island far, far away, leading a lonely life, and then on top of that having a sudden and alarming spiritual experience.

セリフは「 exiled on patmos 」と「 face to face 」にしました。「 exiled on patmos 」は「パトモス島に幽閉された」という意味で、「 face to face 」は「向き合う」という意味ですね。ここでの「向き合う」とは、未知の存在、そしてそのため怖い存在でもある神様と向き合う意味でもあり、恐ろしい事実（＝イエス・キリストから受けた啓示）と向き合う意味でもあります。それぞれのセリフを言っている男はその言葉の精神的な意味を表現しているかのように見えていてほしいところですが、実はセリフを決める前に絵を先に完成させましたので、しゃべっている男たちの雰囲気を感じ取ってセリフを作り上げたという順番でした。

I chose the words "exiled on patmos" and "face to face" for the words that the characters in the picture are saying. "face to face" carries the meaning of facing God, who is an unknown presence and for that reason a frightening presence, as well as the meaning of facing a horrifying truth (in other words, the revelation which the author receives from Jesus Christ). I want each of the characters here to look as if they are portraying the emotional quality of the words, but the truth is that I completed the picture before deciding on the words, so actually the order of the process was to sort of pick up on the feelings embodied in the figures first and then come up with words to express that.

「イエス・キリストの啓示」とも呼ばれていた「ヨハネの黙示録」を読む動機は、とても不思議な妖怪のようなものやファンタジー映画に出そうな迫力に満ちた出来事ことがたくさん入っていて、読むと、幻覚の世界に迷い込んだかのような感覚を呼び起こすお話だと聞き、勇気を振り絞って読んでみることにしました。

The reason I decided to read "The Book of Revelations," which has also been called "The Book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ," is that I heard that it is packed full of very strange creatures and the kind of intense events you might see in a fantasy movie, and that if you read it, you will feel like you are lost in a hallucinatory dream world. I gathered my courage and dove in..

思った通り怖かったです。いや、思ったより怖かったというのは本当のところですね。描かれているのは世界の終末で、前兆となる出来事やでてくる怪物や悪魔の恐ろしさはまさに恐怖そのものでした。

It was as frightening as I had imagined. Or actually, it is truer to say that it was even scarier than I had expected. The story that unfolds here is nothing less than the very end of our world, and the events that serve as precursors to that as well as the monsters and demons that appear are the very essence of fear.

本作品に表現したかったのは、世界の終末という内容に触れる前の時点、まずは神様の啓示をうける時点の著者の気持ちでした。「ヨハネの黙示録」を読めば読むほど、著者はどんな気持ちだったんでしょうかという好奇心が心の中に浮かんできました。

What I wanted to express in this picture was, before even touching upon the part of the story that tells of the end of the world, the feeling of the author in receiving a revelation from God. The more I read "The Book of Revelations," the more I became curious about what the author must have been feeling..

考えてみれば、イエス・キリストや天国に存在する様々な超自然世界的なものたちに会いに天国に行かせられる「体外離脱経験」をさせられた上に、一気に見たこともないものをたくさん見させられたり、聞いたこともない音や声を聞かせられたりしたという「トラウマ的」と言っても良いぐらい非日常的な経験だったはずです。

If you think about it, you can see that in addition to being made to have an "out of body experience" to go to Heaven and see Jesus Christ and the various supernatural creatures that exist in Heaven, the author has an experience that is so unnatural to our way of life that it could even be called traumatic, wherein he is suddenly shown things he has never seen before and hears sounds and voices he has never heard before.

そしてその上に、神様に任せられ、恐ろしい出来事や怪物を見せられ、その恐怖に満ちた神様からのメッセージを世界の人々に伝えなければいけないという重大な使命も与えられ、ヨハネと名乗る著者は私たち人類に神様の言葉を伝えるために圧倒されるような奇妙な感覚を感じさせる未知の世界に入り込んだ探検者でした。（もちろん、その「黙示録」は本当の話であることが前提ですね。）

And what's more, he is burdened with the heavy mission of being chosen by God, witnessing frightening events and monsters, and then giving God's horrifying message to the people of the world. This author who calls himself John is an explorer who dives into an unknown world that invokes an overpowering feeling of the bizarre in order to bring God's word to us, the people of the earth (that is, if the revelation that he receives is in fact real).

例えば、「ヨハネの黙示録」の 1:10 を読んでみますと、以下の怖い説明があります。

For example, turning to 1:10 of "The Book of Revelations," we see this frightening description..

「ある主の日のこと、わたしは『霊』に満たされていたが、後ろの方でラッパのように響く大声を聞きました。」

"On the Lord's day the Spirit took control of me, and I heard a loud voice that sounded like a trumpet, speaking behind me."

「霊」に満たされるとは、どんな気持ちでしょうか。悪の存在ではないといえ、自分よりはるかに強いなにかに取り付かれるとはどんな気持ちでしょうか。考えるだけでも背筋がゾクゾクします。

What would it feel like for the "Spirit" to take control of you? Even though it is not an evil force by any means, you still have to wonder what it would feel like to be under the spell of a presence infinitely more powerful than yourself. Just thinking about it sends chills down my spine.

このようなことを考えながら今回の作品を作りました。
